How to make awesome YouTube videos with Sharon Farrell

Sharon Farrell from The Online Makeup School knows how to create beautiful videos for next to nothing.

Read on to find out how she got started, for some tips on making awesome videos and what you will learn at her upcoming Be MPowered workshop.

How did you first get into video?

I started a YouTube channel nine years ago to share makeup tutorials and reviews while I was working as a makeup artist. I was so passionate about the industry and excited to part of the newly forming online beauty community. It was a revelation to be able to speak to women across the globe and connect in a significant way that only video can achieve.

When did the penny drop about how powerful video is?

When I started to get emails from women telling me how my videos help them get through tough times. The ability to speak directly to someone who might be watching on their laptop curled up in bed is so intimate. It's built a relationship between me and my viewers.

How long does it take you to make a video now?

It depends on what's involved but usually it takes about three days from start to finish.

What has been the most surprising part about making and posting videos?

How much I enjoy the technical and gear aspect of it! I've turned into a bit of a camera gear junkie and have amassed quite the collection of lenses ... don't tell my husband.

What does a good video need to have?

Audio quality is often overlooked by those starting out. It doesn't matter how high quality your camera is or how engaging you are as a presenter; lousy audio is unwatchable.

What are some common mistakes you see people making?

Usually, it's simple mistakes like over or under-exposing a shot, meaning it's either too light or too dark. Another common mistake is using auto-white balance with natural daylight so that the colours keep changing as you film - it can be quite distracting to watch.

How much time and money should you invest in video?

You don't need to spend a lot of money on video, at least not to start with. Smartphones have amazing cameras now, and editing apps are easy to use and just as powerful as desktop editing software. The most important thing is creating engaging and authentic content that connects with your audience, and often that is the opposite of highly produced 'slick' video. But invest in a microphone because I really cannot stress enough how important good audio is.

What kinds of products and services suit video?

I think anything can suit video if you think creatively. Even traditionally 'dry' services like tax and accounting could have fantastic educational content around tax time. People also love to see 'behind the scenes' and learn how products are developed and manufactured. Or even learn about the people and stories behind a company. Honestly, you're only limited by your imagination.

What is the one thing you want your workshop attendees to learn/understand?

That video is not scary, and you don't need to hire a production company to get started. It's fast, fun and there is no better way to build a connection with your audience.
