2020 hit the world like a freight train running at full speed. All businesses, especially smaller ones, have borne the full impact of the pandemic – some have thrived and others failed.

The good news? The year is not over yet.

There’s still time to end 2020 on a positive note, and plan for your business in 2021.

Two Mums & Co members reflect on their experiences during 2020, and our parenting and career coach shares tips on how to set up your business for success in 2021.

Simone's story

Mums & Co Accelerate Member, Simone Longworth's business is the Birthday Fairy.

When the pandemic hit, clients cancelled bookings and Simone had to issue refunds.

“I didn’t know how long we’d be in lockdown so I forced myself to keep going. I offered online birthday parties and entertainment through subscription packages for craft and science activities, so kids got a break from homeschooling and so did their parents. We connected with so many new families via Zoom, that after restrictions were lifted, we’re now busier than ever!”

“2020 taught me that it’s important to value your time and focus on building quality relationships. I’m looking forward to supporting many small businesses in 2021.”

Julia's story

Mums & Co Accelerate Member, Julia Glass has a budding business Flowers by Julia G.

2020 was a big year for Julia. She welcomed a new baby and started a floristry business.

“I did my first wedding in early March just before Covid-19 happened. My business started thriving because people had smaller weddings. The slower pace has helped me manage running a business and looking after my daughter, who’s now six months old. I’m going into 2021 with more confidence about my abilities and my business.”

Julia’s top tip is to back yourself and your work in 2021 and beyond. “Know that you’ve got this! Believe that your work is valued and so are you.”

3 tips from a parenting & career coach

Like all small businesses, Kirsty Levin, a parenting and career coach at The Parents Village, had to transition her business so she could deliver online services. “If there’s anything 2020 has taught me, it’s that we are more resilient than we think.”

She shares her expert tips on how to thrive as a mum and business owner in the new year.

  1. Slowing down is okay – Cut yourself some slack and look after yourself, so you’re equipped to deal with challenges
  2. Set small, achievable goals in 2021 with clear timeframes, so you know the next steps and have an action plan to carry you forward
  3. Create a support network for guidance and continuous learning, to help you navigate any challenges and stay accountable.

Above all, don’t compare yourself to others. As individuals, mums and business owners, our journeys will be different. Learn to celebrate your achievements and successes, and feel proud of how far you’ve come.
